Writing Environment

“Our Writing Spaces Matter”

“It’s nice to be able to put yourself in an environment where you can completely accept all the unconscious stuff that comes to you from your inner workings of your mind.” -Bob Dylan

This is something I have been thinking about for a long time. For me there’s a difference between the time I actually write and the time I’m absorbing all these different ideas to make it into something new. The second one doesn’t ask me to put it into words. It’s just thoughts mulling around in my head growing into new perceptions and ideas.

There’s a million other things to do but the most important thing we do in this life is to find ways to play. We gain more from playing than people are willing to admit. We aren’t supposed to outgrow the things that get our minds moving. Play is like oil. It makes the gears run smoothly.

My first novel started out as play and often I go too serious. I had to back up and remember why I started writing it in the first place. Don’t forget how much fun you had writing in a way that lit up your world. Now that I’m writing this, I realize how easy it is to forget how much fun I used to have.

If this is anything, it’s a reminder that this is supposed to be fun! Lighten up. Find your inner child and coax him out with some play! That’s where your creativity lives.

Saschia Jayne Johnson is the author of Writer’s Quest: A Triptych. On her free time, she likes to be with her family outdoors and traveling. New England is her home and place of birth. When asked what she wants to teach the world she replied, "Don't stop searching. Too many times, in my old life, I put my search aside for more 'important matters.' I didn't realize it was the search that held what was most important; curiosity." Saschia works daily on improving her craft and at times can get down on herself, but her favorite morning mantra is "It's a new day." and that's what she strives to start with.
