Embracing Tiredness and Writing Through the Fog

“Give yourself permission to write something small.” Julia Amante

The trick is to write through the fog. Tonight I’m tired. I have been staring at a screen all day. I am happy to be here, and I’m also tired and ready to get under my weighted blanket. I think it’s okay to want both consistency from an evening ritual and a desire to just sleep. It’s so human, isn’t it? Now, I know you’re like, “Yeah, we all know this; we all get tired,” but hear me out.

This means that when it’s time to sit at your computer to write, you have got to feel both things. Just feel it. Don’t explain it. Don’t feed either any energy; just accept you want both consistency and rest.

It important to acknowledge because our brains can do funny things sometimes, like skip around. Instead of accepting the truth—that there will be a handful of times you’re tired and a handful of times when you have the energy—it will make absolute statements like “I’m always tired; maybe this isn’t for me.” That statement is a ❌ lie. It is your brain taking shortcuts. It also likes to say things like “I haven’t written in days anyway; I’ll just do it tomorrow.” ❌Also wrong.

While you’re here let reframe those shortcuts into truthful statements.

Instead of “I’m always tired,”

try

“It’s okay to be tired while I work. I don’t have to be perfect; I just have to get something down.”

Or instead of “I’ll just do it tomorrow,” say

“Every day that I invest in what I love counts. Every day counts.”

Sometimes, we just have to step in and create new shortcuts that support our disciplines.

That’s why I think it’s important to say things like I want to be here but I also want to be in bed. Once we accept those feelings/desires, we can have more awareness of the impending shortcuts. When we know they are coming, especially in the fog, we can arm ourselves with healthy shortcuts to stay on track.

How do you stay disciplined?

Jayne is a writer. On her free time she likes to be with her family hiking outdoors and traveling. New England is her home and place of birth. When asked what she wants to teach the world she replied, "Don't stop searching. Too many times, in my old life, I put my search aside for more 'important matters.' I didn't realize the thing I was searching for held what was most important; my soul purpose." Jayne works daily on improving her craft and at times can get down on herself, but her favorite morning mantra is "It's a new day." and that's what she strives to start with.
