What is writing? Writing is telepathy.
Stephen King
Stephen King has the best quotes for writers. I found this quote and then had to look up the definition for telepathy to make sure I was understanding the word properly. So, here’s the definition,
“the supposed communication of thoughts or ideas by means other than the known senses.” And now that I read the definition I can fully agree. The act of writing has been such an enlightening experience for me that I can only be convinced that there’s other senses. My first project was a historical fiction novel, and the research began finding me. It was all so fascinating. Reminds me of a line in an essay titled The Door by EB White,
He crossed (carefully) the room, the thick carpet under him softly, and went toward the door carefully, which was glass and he could see himself in it, and which, at his approach, opened to allow him to pass through; and beyond he half expected to find one of the old doors that he had known, perhaps the one with the circle, the one with the girl her arms outstretched in loveliness and beauty before him. But he saw instead a moving stairway, and descended in light (he kept thinking) to the street below and to the other people. As he stepped off, the ground came up slightly, to meet his foot.

There’s millions of new worlds to explore and writing allows it to all unfold at your fingertips. It can unfold so quickly it’s as if the story is finding you.
What about you? What’s your experience with writing or the arts in general?
