I found that with depression, one of the most important things you could realize is that you’re not alone.
Dwayne Johnson
Alone? During my darkest days, I didn’t want to be around other people. I wanted to be alone. So when I read quotes like this, I thought I couldn’t relate. Once I shifted my perspective from loneliness as in being with others to loneliness as in lack of connection, I could finally understand the quote. Connection feels good. Made me think even more about how good it can sometimes feel to be understood. That’s when quotes like this one began to make more sense. To be understood, to be heard, to be listened to, that is what takes away the loneliness. You could be in a room full of people who share the same hobbies and life experiences but you’re going to feel mighty lonely in that sea full of people if no ones listens to you or takes time to understand you.
We eliminate loneliness by creating an authentic connection.
That doesn’t instantly cure loneliness or depression but it does help others feel a little less alone. And these days, with all the loss we are experiencing, every little bit counts.
