Enough About You

Let them find you writing

Ok, the truth is this writing thing is all about you!

I’m going to say this and just pause for a second after you hear it.

You need to be absolutely selfish with your writing.

Alright, how’d you feel? Up for the challenge? Irritated and resistant? Whatever you felt, it’s good. We get the God-given privilege to feel things. Keep doing that.

Now let’s get to it. We are taught that we need to give, give, give and go, go, go, and that goes for men and women.

We are going to pause and take a deep breath. Inhale. Exhale.

We get to plan a time to write and be as selfish with that block of time as we want. I had to turn down a lot of nights out. I had to tell a lot of friends that I wasn’t in the place to be that type of friend right now.

That sounds harsh but a) if they love you, they respect your dreams and what it takes to reach them and b) no one else is going to do it for you.

That block of time you have to write is sacred. It is yours to develop your craft. YOUR craft. It is yours to think, to swallow hard truths, and to brush the dust from the world of your soul. We thrive as writers when we commit to our craft.

Take that writing space for yourself and ultimately, you’ll be giving back diamonds, or better yet, stories.

So take, take, take time to develop your craft!

It’s not just give, give, give; society makes us feel like we need these outrageous workloads that take all our time and energy. We don’t. Stop, stop, stop and say no to that extra work that you don’t need.

If you wake up in the morning and all you can think about is being a writer, then you’re a writer.

Now claim that.

Let them find you writing.

If you felt inspired by this post,
the next best thing is to support my work.

Jayne is a writer. On her free time she likes to be with her family hiking outdoors and traveling. New England is her home and place of birth. When asked what she wants to teach the world she replied, "Don't stop searching. Too many times, in my old life, I put my search aside for more 'important matters.' I didn't realize the thing I was searching for held what was most important; my soul purpose." Jayne works daily on improving her craft and at times can get down on herself, but her favorite morning mantra is "It's a new day." and that's what she strives to start with.
