A Pile of Words

“Before I start a project, I always ask myself the following question. Why is this book worth a year of my life? There needs to be something about the theme, the technique, or the research that makes the time spent on it worthwhile.” – David Morrell

This quote makes me want to cry immediately after I read it. I’m not sure my story is worth the amount of time I’ve spent on it. Maybe I’ll do my best to make the time I spent on it my big secret. It’s for sure just a pile of words. I don’t know that they even come together to form something tangible. I mean, I hope I get there, but it might just be time to start a new story. Maybe I’ll return to this one in the future? I don’t know. It was never my plan to work on it this long. And there’s an infinite amount of stories to tell!!

What’s the longest you worked on a story?

Jayne is a writer. On her free time she likes to be with her family hiking outdoors and traveling. New England is her home and place of birth. When asked what she wants to teach the world she replied, "Don't stop searching. Too many times, in my old life, I put my search aside for more 'important matters.' I didn't realize the thing I was searching for held what was most important; my soul purpose." Jayne works daily on improving her craft and at times can get down on herself, but her favorite morning mantra is "It's a new day." and that's what she strives to start with.

  1. Jayne, I understand your frustration. I’ve written two novels in my life and dozens of short stories. I’ve published none of my prose, but published a handful of poems in small journals over the years.

Most of my poetic output is available on my two WordPress.com sites. Novels are a completely different animal. I wrote mine before graduating university. After I started my career and married, I no longer had the motivation and energy for longer forms. Instead I wrote flash fiction and more frequently, poetry.

However, my older cousin has successfully published multiple novels in her chosen niche. She’s a mom and a young grandmother. So, it is possible! Keep the faith and good luck!

    1. oh wow so much here! I have a lot a feelings about this. I think the book could be something great.

I often struggle with endings in real life and in my writing. haha so there’s probably something there.

Thank you for the encouragement and thank you for pursuing your writing in a way that works for you!! That’s so inspiring. I have read some of your work. It’s very creative and thought provoking. I’ll have to go read some more now.
