Types of Writers

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.” -Albert Einstein

There are several different types of writers. When someone says, “I’m a writer.” The first question should be, “Oh that’s awesome, there’s so many ways to write. What ways do you enjoy writing?”

If you assume too much, you may remove a fish from water.

  • Fiction Writers
    • Novelists
    • Playwrights
    • Screenwriters
    • Poets
    • Short story writers
  • Non Fiction Writers
    • Journalists
    • Essayists
    • Copywriters
    • Technical Writers
    • Biographers

Some writers may be masters at all types but it’s important to keep in mind that different writing styles require different skill sets. A technical writer who excels at crafting clear instructions might struggle with the creative metaphors needed for a poem.

Many writers choose to specialize in a certain type of writing, such as short stories, copywriting, or journalism. This allows them to develop their skillset and become known for their work in a specific niche.

With all that being said, I do wonder if writers who are willing to learn new skills and adapt to new technologies will be the most successful?

Jayne is a writer. On her free time she likes to be with her family hiking outdoors and traveling. New England is her home and place of birth. When asked what she wants to teach the world she replied, "Don't stop searching. Too many times, in my old life, I put my search aside for more 'important matters.' I didn't realize the thing I was searching for held what was most important; my soul purpose." Jayne works daily on improving her craft and at times can get down on herself, but her favorite morning mantra is "It's a new day." and that's what she strives to start with.
