Leave it Out of the Story

“A successful book is not made of what is in it, but what is left out of it.” – Mark Twain

Well, this gives me something to think about. I get too hung up on what I want in my book that I haven’t considered what I should intentionally leave out. Now that’s interesting. I think things I don’t like will naturally be left out because don’t we avoid those things anyway? I want to enjoy my writing, but I deeply appreciate the entire human experience. This really got me thinking.

Jayne is a writer. On her free time she likes to be with her family hiking outdoors and traveling. New England is her home and place of birth. When asked what she wants to teach the world she replied, "Don't stop searching. Too many times, in my old life, I put my search aside for more 'important matters.' I didn't realize the thing I was searching for held what was most important; my soul purpose." Jayne works daily on improving her craft and at times can get down on herself, but her favorite morning mantra is "It's a new day." and that's what she strives to start with.

  1. Wow that’s a really important insight. I remember that when my teachers and mentors reviewed my early writing, especially stories and essays, I used too many words on description instead of character development, especially dialog. I tended to go overboard on the adjectives and too little on active voice (emphasis on strong verbs and nouns).

      1. Ohh those are good to have for sure. I have an amazing mentor. Wouldn’t have gotten this far without that support. Changed my whole mindset.

    1. You know, there’s some writers who are good at droning on and on while keeping my attention but not everyone has the skill to keep an audience with all that. lol Like say… kill your darlings
